Damontre Moore of Texas A&M is one of the most talented pass rushers is the 2013 NFL Draft. Regarded as one of the most talented players in the entire NFL Draft regardless of position, it was generally accepted that he would be taken in the top five selections. Some doubt has now crept into the picture, with talk of character issues that could drop his stock in the eyes of front offices around the league trying to find the next piece to their Super Bowl puzzle. Will Damontre Moore slide down the board?
Damontre Moore is a beast on the football field. That's why he's such a highly-touted prospect heading into the 2013 NFL Draft. However, it may be issues off the football field that end up having the greatest impact on his NFL Draft stock. The 12.5 sacks he posted this past season as a junior will be tough to ignore, as well as the eight sacks he recorded as a sophomore, but can NFL teams feel confident in his ability to stay out of trouble?
The opinions on this in the different front offices around the NFL will differ, so it's no surprise that there are some differing opinions amongst those trying to project the NFL Draft. Two of the most well-known, Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, are split on the issue. While Mel Kiper still has Damontre Moore going second overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, Todd McShay has him going 13th in his latest mock draft.
It speaks to Damontre Moore's talent that we are examining a drop in his stock and he's still a Top 15 selection at this point. But are the character issues overblown?
The only real incident of note is when Damontre Moore was arrested as a freshman for possessing marijuana. Since then he has stayed clean and his performance has skyrocketed on the field. So where's the major "character baggage" that has Todd McShay so worried? Unless it's something that hasn't been made public at this point, this seems to be some major nitpicking. That can happen when everything in the lives of these athletes is dissected. Damontre Moore will have the opportunity to answer any such questions about his character at the 2013 NFL Combine if it's really an issue.
If one incident his freshman year is going to drop Damontre Moore down the board, some NFL team picking near the middle of the first round is going to be very happy. Honestly, that's not very likely to happen.
